How To Draw Sound Effects
By Loston Wallace
This tutorial will show you how to draw sound effects by hand. It's possible to do this with Photoshop fonts of course, but doing it by hand allows more flexibility. I begin with a rough sketch of the letters using a sharpie. I put an X in the O to show where the sound effects will radiate out from.
Next, I draw guidelines radiating outward from the X. This is a very important step.
I now make my jagged lines over the outline. It's ok if they are rough at this stage.
I copy the drawing and clean it up. Using a ruler, I straighten the lines. I also use a brush pen and clean up the letters. I like the white streaks through the letters, and I use white out in combination with the brush pen to get this look.
Here's a variation with the letters outlined. I use an ellipse template or french curve to get nice smooth round shapes.
You can have a lot of fun with this. Here you can see several variations.
