This tutorial will teach you how to draw hair. Instead of drawing individual strands, draw the hair as a single unit. You should draw highlights and shadows as connected masses. Remember that since the head is round, the highlights should wrap around the head rather than being drawn as straight lines. You can see both the correct and incorrect ways to draw hair above. In order to improve your drawings, always use reference. Try converting your pictures to black and white in your image editor so that you can see the highlights and shadows more clearly. (Desaturate is Shift+Ctrl+U in Photoshop).
Use the same ideas for wavy and curly hair. Notice how the highlights with shadows on either side help sell the illusion of curling shapes.
