How To Draw Batgirl
By Loston Wallace
In this tutorial, you will learn how to draw Batgirl. Let's break down the steps so you can see how to approach drawing your own characters!
In the first image, you can actually see 2 steps. The first step is a fast and loose gesture drawing on a piece of scrap paper with a pencil. Draw the head and spine, then begin drawing parts of the body off of the spine. Rough in the ribcage, shoulders, hips, etc. After placing the collar bone and shoulders, draw her breasts and flesh out her arms. Roughly place her eyes, nose and mouth.
Next, work over the pencils with a pen or marker and refine the form. Since the final drawing will be on a different sheet of paper, use what you like.
The next step is to transfer the image onto another piece of paper. In this case, the image was transferred to bristol board via a lightbox. Draw very lightly during this stage, so you can make adjustments along the way. Notice her left arm is cropped out of the picture due to the size of the final image. When cropping a limb, it's important not to crop at a joint like an elbow or knee.
Now using heavier lines, draw the contours to outline the body. Make long, confident strokes, not fuzzy lines.
Finish outlining your character.
Begin roughing in your shadows. In this case, the light source is to the right and in front of Batgirl.
Now soften the shadows to accentuate the feminine figure. Save the eyes for last so you don't accidentally smudge them.
In the final step, draw the eyes and punch up the values to add interest. Finish the background, and clean up the lines with a kneaded or electric eraser.
